Cab to “Dwarka”
Speeding @ 80kmphand the winds gushing and making a strange sound ; just past ten in the night ,it was fiery but had no choice, I thought should have never boarded this dreadful cab but was wrong as the journey progressed .Though I had traveled on this route extensively before but that particular day it was different, scary and ruthless.
“Sheila can you stay back for sometime today, got some assignment to be completed as soon as possible.” said my senior.
I thought it’s a nice opportunity to impress my senior official but at the risk of traveling late hmm… Half-heartedly I said “Yes Sir, your wish is my command”. I could have told my boss I have to go a far way but ahhh… I stayed back.
We started working and as we were contemplating success our energy level raised and we worked till quarter to ten.” Sheila, tank you child with your help I have completed the task “, said a tired voice. “Sir, it’s my pleasure working with you”, I said.
“Shall, I drop you Sheila”, Said my Sir. No thank you Sir I will go by my self. My boss appreciated my boldness.
He left by his car and I waited for the last bus but to my horror I just missed the last bus by a whisker.
I had no other choice but to hire a cab. I asked a lot of cabbies but they refused stating”Kya memsaab Saket se Dwarka is raat ko, mein nahin jaaonga.
But finally, I got one, chalo beito ,kamdanda nahi hai aa jatey hain ,Dwarka ohh… The only words he spoke ;the rest of journey he behaved as a pantomime . I kept quiet didn’t utter word.
The streets were dark, lonely and only a few torch ere stood at some corners. I was petrified, perturbed and my bones chilled.
As the journey was long didn know how the cabbie would behave with me ,had lots of thoughts running in my mind, cause just had heard of about how cal centre girls (who travel during night hours) were subjected to rape and sexual harassment .
Just as theses thoughts were running in my mind the vehicle came to a sudden halt I couldn’t see clearly but there appeared two torsos. Suddenly saw them advancing towards me “chal bahar nikal(come get out)”, said a stern voice , putting a bold face I said “no”.
They had lethal weaponsand their intent didn’t seem to be robbery. A good guerdon for working late. The scene was getting worse that’s when the taxi driver took centre stage.
He fought against the bullies and speeded away the car, saving my self respect and life.I thanked him but he didn’t respond . I reached my place safely and one again I thanbked him and asked him why did he save my life rather than running away from the scene as the thugs had weapons. He said that even he had a daughter just like me who was subjected to sexual harassment by some goons and lost her life. He was a helpless father couldn do anything to save her life and he couldn afford one more loss in front of his eyes.
PS: The story in this case has ended on a happy note but its not always the case. We have been hearing of many such events day in and day out .
The main idea of my article is to bring into light the plight of the girls of modern day India. Is our nation safe enough???
